Tips for a child friendly wedding

Should we have children at our wedding? One of the big questions every couple asks themselves when planning their big day. On one hand, the combination of adorable chiffon dresses, flower crowns and handstands on the green can add a wonderful charm and make for some super photo opportunities. But on the other, interrupted vows and screaming fits during dinner can slightly diminish the sheen of an otherwise perfect day.

The choice is a personal one, and there is no right or wrong answer. However, if you do decide to embrace the generations and invite youngsters to your wedding, it is important to ensure you have suitable distractions and entertainment in place.

Reception drinks offer the perfect opportunity to provide some fun and games which can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Lawn games are the perfect entertainment for this part of the day and most can be positioned indoors or out dependant on the weather. Giant Connect Four is simple enough for little ones, but still fun to be enjoyed by all ages. Other great options include; Giant Jenga, Skittles and Quoits. We can recommend a great selection of local companies who have a fantastic range of lawn games to suit any taste and wedding style.

An excellent way many of our brides and grooms choose to occupy children during dinner is by supplying kids with their very own wedding survival kit. The key is to make sure the contents is fun, but also reasonably quiet so that nearby grown-ups can still enjoy your big day without the distraction of noisy toys. Some good (age dependant) ideas include; colouring books, games of eye spy, puzzles, a disposable camera, a story book, activity placemats and one of our couples even had a bowlful of Lego on the kids table with the attached request ‘build us something fun’.

If you are worried that a leisurely wedding breakfast may be too much of a lengthy ask, why not set up an entertainment area with a magician in our Dairy Barn to provide youngsters with a fun show and ensure grown-ups remain nag free throughout dinner.

Another great idea for a child friendly wedding is to employ a professional nanny service to make sure sleepy heads are well looked after as the party moves past bedtime. Our Bridal Suite is the perfect place for a little one’s pyjama party, complete with DVDs and cosy sofa with blankets, it is the ideal spot for kids to doze off until mums and dads have finished enjoying the festivities.

The key to disruption free success is to keep children occupied and not let them get bored. For us a wedding is a glorious occasion we look forward to for months on end, but for the average five-year-old it can be a long day filled with grown-ups, sitting still and behaving. However, with a little extra thought and preparation there is no reason why you cannot have a beautiful child-friendly wedding without a tantrum in sight.
