In May we were very excited to host an extra special wedding here at Southend Barns when Mariella’s brother Art and his beautiful fiancé, Jody, tied the knot. The day was an explosion of colour and class with the couple’s Dutch heritage as well as their successful vineyard business playing a leading role in the decor.
Gezelligheid, a Dutch concept that can be translated to mean convivial and fun or a feeling of belonging and general togetherness, was at the heart of the day with the couple creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that was all about celebrating with family and friends.
Experts in hosting guests at their successful tasting room at Tinwood Vineyard in Halnaker, Art and Jody definitely showed that they know how to throw a good party! From the vivacious colour theme to the fun photos, caricaturist and Ibiza-style evening party with music by Nigel Smith, everything about this wedding was geared towards having fun. Even the weather was on their side, being the first sunny day of the month!
Needless to say the flowing drinks also played a key part with trays of Tinwood Brut and Rose served during the drinks reception with a slice of wedding cake. During the wedding breakfast, one guest from each table was given a surprise request from the couple to collect a Tinwood Magnum from the bar in preparation for the speeches.
As usual Field & Fork cooked up a sumptuous and soulful feast, which included smoked salmon Scotch eggs to start, followed by maple and black pepper glazed short rib of beef and a trio of delectable desserts to ensure there was something to tickle all tastebuds!
We always love to see a wedding where the couple’s personality shines through and Art and Jody embodied every element of their big day. The vibrant bouquets and arrangements by Gracie at The Flower Gallery brightened every corner with bursts of blue, yellow, pinks, green and of course orange, a colour that symbolises their Dutch background.
Lots of personal touches could be found around the barns such as the white wooden hearts adorning the flower beds lovingly made by Jody’s Dad and the Dutch flag flying high on the Southend House flagpole! Inside the Threshing Barn, there were more fun but meaningful features including miniature pairs of wooden clogs and bright orange toilet roll (an amusing gift to the couple from Mariella). Another memorable moment was during the ceremony when the couple’s nephew delivered the wedding rings with the words Ring Security emblazoned on the back of his jacket!
Hints of Tinwood also peppered the day with cropped wine bottles used to hold floating candles as part of their table décor, an impressive champagne sabre was used to cut the beautiful fruit and flower adorned naked cake by Milk Street Kitchen, and of course guests’ glasses flowed with only the best English sparkling wine!
While guests were kept entertained with chilled out Ibiza sunset-style music, Art and Jody were whisked off by photographer Kelly Hearn to have photos taken in the barley field which looked stunning drenched in the evening sun.
The up-beat atmosphere and energy continued on through to the evening with a fantastic party before the day ended with a bang thanks to a spectacular firework display high over the barns by Selstar Fireworks.
