Tips for a Rainy Day Wedding

Happy couple at Southend Barns wedding celebration

From storms to sunshine and back to storms again, this week has reminded us just how changeable the good old British weather can be.

If you’re planning your wedding for the winter months, please don’t feel disheartened, we are here to show you that, whatever the weather, your Southend Barns wedding day will be everything you ever dreamed.

Our Sussex wedding venue is perfectly equipped to combat anything Mother Nature throws at us, giving you full use of our venue, no matter rain or shine. In our experience, the weather you wouldn’t necessarily wish for, can result in the most beautiful of celebrations.

Keep reading for our tips for a breath-taking rainy day wedding.

Raindrops Keep Falling

Providing shade from the sun or a cosy shelter from the drizzle and overlooking our picturesque gardens, our outdoor Collecting Yard has been entirely weather proofed to protect from the elements. Complete with chic glass screens to shield the wind, and iconic three peaks above, it’s as stylish as it is practical. The fire pit, alfresco bar, twinkling lights, heaters, sheepskin rugs and blankets make this a glorious outdoor retreat, in all weathers.

The Collecting Yard also makes a great spot to make the most of our Terrace Cocktail Bar and food options. Why not opt for delicious s’mores by the fire, a drinks station serving warm drinks like our luxury hot chocolate, or perhaps our speciality mulled wine, mulled cider and seasonal cocktails? Click here to take a look at more of our food and drink options.

It’s a Beautiful Day

One of the reasons our barn venue makes a great choice any time of year, is our stunning ceremony options. Whether you are tying the knot alongside our resident alpacas in the peaceful Secret Garden, or making your way down the aisle under gorgeous exposed beams in our Dairy Barn, our licensed indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces provide you with a perfectly picturesque backdrop for your vows.

Under My Umbrella

One of our favourite rainy day wedding moments is the Southend Barns umbrella tunnel! On the short journey to and from your ceremony space, keeping the bride and groom dry is priority, so our whole team gets involved in creating shelter from the rain with an impressive line-up of pretty white umbrellas. Some of the most memorable wedding pictures have been captured under this canopy – a truly romantic moment.

Kiss the Rain

Remember the scene when Mr Darcy declares his love in the pouring rain, or how about that famous stormy kiss in Breakfast at Tiffany’s? Whilst we aren’t suggesting you drench yourself for dramatic effect on your wedding day, in the right venue rain can be incredibly romantic and make for some absolutely glorious wedding photographs.

Couples have used the rain to beautiful effect in our tranquil grounds, encouraging photographers to take advantage of the glistening backdrop of our stunning, surrounding countryside. Whether a portrait beneath a shimmering halo of leaves or a sweet embrace under a clear umbrella, rainy-day wedding photos have a romance all of their own. We have even had couples channel that ultimate movie moment with a romantic kiss in the rain at the end of the night!

Whether you prefer to keep your carefully coiffed hair intact or embrace the elements, we have a great variety of picture-perfect locations throughout our venue including our rose garden, pretty pergola, alpaca field, Mama Lou Shepherd’s Hut and many more.

Chase the Rainbow

Now we couldn’t possibly discuss the beauty of a rainy wedding day without bringing up the romance of the rainbow. Thought to be a sign of good luck on a wedding day, it also makes for some spectacular photos.

Surrounded by blissful countryside with clear views all around, our Sussex wedding venue is the perfect spot to capture this beautiful arc of colour in all its glory. Just make sure your photographer keeps a watchful eye on the skies, because when it comes to that kiss at the end of the rainbow, timing is everything.

Blame it on the Weatherman

If the weather forecast is looking a little unpredictable, hair and make-up can be the first thing to spring to mind for the bridal party (and guests). To ensure your wedding day look remains pristine, chat with your hair and make-up artists about weather-proofing. However, if you are planning on doing your own hair and make-up, here are a few things that can help you combat the damp…

If your hair is prone to frizz at the first hint of rain it is key to keep it super moisturised in the run up to your big day. Whether this means splashing out for a pro keratin treatment or adding a few DIY intensive hair masks to your pre wedding day routine. When it comes to make up, you never know when a sentimental word might trigger the waterworks, so whatever the weather, budge proof options are always the best choice.

Here Comes the Sun

The takeaway? If your wedding day is approaching and the forecast isn’t looking promising, please don’t fret. Our venue has been carefully designed to cater for a beautiful wedding day in all-weather conditions. No matter what, our expert team work tirelessly to ensure you have a day you and your guests will remember fondly for years to come. From having umbrellas at the ready and blankets to keep guests’ cosy to serving up warm drinks and keeping the barns looking immaculate throughout your day, we’ve got you covered!

So, put down the weather app, embrace the elements and, rain or shine, let Southend Barns give you the celebration you have always dreamed of.

The Perfect Timings for your Wedding Day

Newly wed couple with wedding rings

When it comes to planning your wedding day celebrations, one of the most important elements to consider is your wedding day timings. Get it wrong and you risk either guests twiddling their thumbs or not having the space to relax. Get it right, and your wedding goes down in friend and family history as the event of the century.

“But what are the perfect wedding day timings??” we hear you cry! With so much to organise and plan, we decided to take this tricky admin task off your hands and let you know the very best structure for a glorious wedding day.

When to Say I Do

Arguably the most important part of your wedding, the ceremony sets the marker for the pace of the rest of the day. Whilst traditionally couples tied the knot in the morning, we find later makes for a smoother pace. Our recommended ceremony times tend to be 2pm for a summer ceremony and 1pm for a ceremony which takes place in the winter.

Whilst 2pm is ideal as it offers you and your guests enough time for a little lunch before the day’s events start to unfold, opting for a slightly earlier ceremony time in the winter means there is still plenty of natural light for which to enjoy your drinks reception and also have photographs taken in our beautiful grounds.

Getting Ready

Our Milking Parlour Bridal Suite opens its doors to you at 11am on the day of your wedding, leaving plenty of time for primping, preening and looking your absolute best.

If you are having your hair and make-up professionally done, experts suggest leaving an approximate window of one and a half to two hours for this. However, if anyone else in your bridal party is having their hair and make-up done professionally, that will also need to be factored in to your timings. Our Milking Parlour is a beautiful and spacious place, but if your bridal party is particularly large, it may be worth asking some people to dress elsewhere and just join you for finishing touches and that all important glass of bubbly.

Opening The Gates

So your ceremony is at 2pm, when should you ask your guests to arrive?

This is a delicate balancing act. Whilst you need to leave a buffer to account for any unexpected delays, getting guests to arrive too early and having them waiting around really doesn’t set the day off to a good start. We suggest a 1.30pm arrival for a 2pm ceremony. The extra half an hour allows for reasonable delays and gives guests time to quickly catch up with loved ones, but also means everyone is still full of energy and excited for your arrival down the aisle.

Time to Eat

Whilst reception drinks and canapés usually follow the ceremony, the timing of your wedding breakfast is the next key decision in your wedding day plan. We tend to suggest leaving an hour and a half between the end of your ceremony and the call to the Threshing Barn. This provides ample time for relaxed drinks and chatting with guests before everyone is ushered through for dinner. So if your ceremony finishes at 2.45pm, we suggest inviting guests to the Threshing Barn at around 4.15pm ready for a 4.30pm meal.

Evening Guest Arrival Time

Planning day guests and evenings guests? When inviting separate people for the evening it is really important to ensure there is no overlap with the section of the day they were not invited to – for example the meal. We therefore recommend that evening guests are invited from 7.30pm onwards, giving enough time for dinner to be finished, the room adapted if necessary and for your day guests to be getting in the evening party spirit!

The Cutting of the Cake

A lovely part of the day for your evening guest to witness is the cutting of your cake. We suggest doing this at around 7.55pm, just before your DJ or band starts, to ensure everyone gets to enjoy this moment with you. The cake cutting then seamlessly leads off into the first dance at 8.00pm signifying the start of the party.

Food Glorious Evening Food

If you are keen to ensure all your guests are having the very best time, then evening food is a great addition to your day. 9.00pm is a prime time to serve this as there has been a reasonable gap since the end of your wedding breakfast. Well timed evening food gives an extra boost of energy to keep people dancing right to the end. It also offers a little help to those who may have hit the bar a bit too hard…

Carriages

The bar closes and music ends at 11.30pm here at Southend Barns and we request that all wedding guests book carriages for 11.45pm.

As a helpful guide we have included our suggested wedding day timeframe below. This can obviously be adapted to suit your particular day, but these are the timings we feel make for a beautifully paced wedding day.

Beautiful Summer Wedding Trends for 2024

Summer wedding dress trends

While the weather has turned cooler and the days are growing shorter, we still have lots of couples planning their gorgeous summer weddings at Southend Barns. Following a season of absolutely beautiful celebrations here, we’ve narrowed down the very best summer wedding trends that are here to stay for 2024.

Summer offers incredible scope when it comes to wedding day décor. From ethereal Midsummer Night’s Dream styling filled with foliage, fairy lights and floaty chiffon, to an abundance of colour and flowers, simple paired back monochrome chic or textural natural tones, the choices are endless. Keep reading for the crème de la crème of summer wedding styling…

Look to the Skies

You’ve settled on the perfect tablescape, your floral arrangements are on point and you’ve chosen your dream menu, but don’t forget the rafters! Dramatic ceilings are a trend that is here to stay when it comes to wedding day cool. From billowing white drapes to swathes of greenery and jaw dropping floral installations to disco balls, couples are choosing to really make an impact and utilise the whole space as part of their wedding décor.

The ceiling of our Threshing Barn is already impressive offering incredible height and showcasing original 220 year old beams and exquisite chandeliers. However, if you are wishing to emphasise our ceiling even more, it lends itself beautifully to some gorgeous styling options including a twinkling Marquee style fairy light canopy or romantic drapes. Couples have also used our beautiful rafters to great effect to showcase floral installations, from garlands of foliage entwining the beams to the prettiest hoop of flowers hanging centre stage.

The Colours of the Rainbow

Gorgeous wedding day colour is here to stay! With no particular colour reigning supreme, we have seen thoughtful colour in a wash of beautiful hues adorn our barns. From stunning combinations of rust, yellow and cornflower blue, to tonal variations featuring every shade of pink, couples are embracing their own style and preferences for a day which is truly and utterly, them. Stylish black and white is also becoming an increasingly popular wedding day theme, for more inspo on how to go for a modern monochrome look, take a look at our recent styled shoot.

As well as beautiful block colours we have also seen a rise in the number of couples celebrating their special day with patterns. From the sweetest touch of floral print in a tie or handkerchief to extraordinary embroidery on a show-stopping gown and pretty patterned bridesmaid dresses, there are many ways to incorporate this charming trend into your wedding day.

Let them Eat Cake!

Gone are the days of a modest naked sponge cake, the extravagant wedding cake is back! Today’s brides and grooms want mouth-watering decadence from their wedding cake, but that doesn’t mean to say there has been a return to the traditional fruitcake, far from it.

From enormous cheese towers featuring a careful selection of the finest fromage, to multi-tiered, multi-flavoured beauties, these impressive cakes are decorated in a range of beautiful edible designs. From a trail of carefully crafted sugar flowers to fresh fruit and foliage, hand-painted details to incredible, structural cake toppers – the delicious world of cake confectionery is your oyster!

Cheers!

All hail the beauty of choice! A great addition to any wedding day that goes down a treat with guests, is the inclusion of an interactive drinks station.

In place of just the one signature cocktail, couples are opting for glorious choice in the form of a Cocktail Bar, Prosecco Cart, or Gin Station, letting their guests choose for themselves.

Another great option for post dinner drinks is our Espresso Martini Cart, offering a range of delectable Espresso Martini options including coconut, salted caramel and tiramisu, this is a great way to give guests an extra boost of dancing energy.

A Touch of Glamour

What says luxury more than a glittering tower filled to the brim with delicious sparkling wine. The champagne tower is back and we are all for it! As perfectly suited to sun-drenched summer wedding days as it is to winter soirees, this trend is as seasonally flexible as it is timeless. The perfect centrepiece and a great way to make a fun and luxurious splash (literally), a champagne tower is also a wonderful opportunity for some truly outstanding wedding photos.

The trend can be adapted to suit your wedding day décor. Why not choose a pretty blush sparkling rosé for a romantic twist, or alternatively go for classic opulence and old school glamour with golden tinged bubbly.

A Sustainable Wedding Day Haven

A trend which sits close to our hearts as a sustainably run wedding venue, is the rise in eco conscious wedding choices. Couples are forgoing just-for-the-night options like welcome bags and wear once bridesmaid dresses, instead choosing things that will continue to be used even after their wedding day has passed. From edible wedding favours to the use of living plants in the décor, we are seeing more and more planet-conscious couples drawn to our West Sussex wedding venue.

12 years ago Southend Barns Wedding Venue was created with an environmental focus in mind, and sustainability is still a huge part of how we operate. From the way we manage our buildings to growing a large portion of the produce we use in our menus in our own allotment and joining the local council in their journey to go net zero, we are constantly evolving with the environment in mind.

Planning Your Perfect Sussex Wedding Day

Wedding planning can feel pressured, but with the right assistance, it should be a calm, enjoyable and treasured experience, with guidance to ensure you understand every option available to you and can choose each flourish and wedding favour in your own time.

Our mixture of diverse wedding spaces for ceremonies and receptions allows you a variety of options suited to both large-capacity weddings and smaller, intimate and private occasions, depending on how many guests and family members you would prefer to invite.

Venue size is important since this may depend on your guest list and budget – getting the space right ensures your wedding party will neither feel overcrowded nor overly spacious, with a warm, comfortable and welcoming feel.

We advise you to begin by making an indicative guest list to allow you to estimate the total number of attendees, including children. From there, we can work through our Roots catering menus and offer a tasting session, suggest the spaces in and around Southend Barns that will work well, and begin discussing table layouts within your chosen area. Images included in our wedding gallery of previous celebrations and weddings can be a fantastic source of inspiration, where you can see how different setups and configurations look, gain ideas on themes and colour schemes, and think about how you would like to organise your seating plan.

Managing Changes in Guest Numbers for Daytime and Evening Celebrations

Adapting Your Preferred West Sussex Wedding Venue to the Seasons

Although a summer wedding is a classic choice, many couples may wish to consider hosting their wedding during winter, spring or autumn. The weather may influence the wedding dress or outfits you choose, the tone and theme of your wedding day, and where you decide to host the different aspects of your dream wedding.

In the spring, we highly recommend having one element of your wedding outdoors, where the crisp spring sunshine and budding flowers create a feeling of light, happiness and fresh beginnings.

Autumn and winter weddings work charmingly within a rustic barn setting, using warming lighting, bright green hues, snug corners for guests to celebrate and a sumptuous menu. Our delicious coffees served with handmade truffles are always a superb accent, or perhaps an outdoor fire pit with marshmallows to create that sense of comfort.

You may wish to organise your wedding further in advance if you have a specific date in mind – this may be a significant date for your family or you as a couple. Availability tends to be more flexible outside of peak summer seasons – but of course, much depends on your ideas and your vision of an idyllic wedding.

Our downloadable materials provide access to popular themes and contrasting elements, mixing candlelight, antiques, centrepieces, linens, script and gentle lighting – you can also share your ideas for thematic designs to discuss how best to incorporate those visions into your wedding day.

The Distinctive Entertainment and Flavours of Countryside Wedding Venues in West Sussex

Capturing the ambience of a beautiful barn wedding venue provides ample opportunities to organise entertainment, music and flourishes of personalisation, from fire pits to customised street food and grazing menus to wedding cakes, cheese boards and performers.

As with many venues close to the South Downs National Park, Southend Barns controls the use of fireworks and Chinese lanterns, given the impacts these can have on the local wildlife and ecosystems.

However, we can provide access to our approved fireworks supplier and advise on ways to create a spectacle of light that is kind and gentle on the protected landscapes surrounding our West Sussex wedding venue.

Traditional entertainment can be easily accommodated into our spacious, generous grounds and gardens, with options such as performers, bands, musicians, classical artists and DJs.

The ample space within The Threshing Barn is well suited to energetic and celebratory entertainment, and we ensure the large-scale windows and doors are closed to conserve the impact of your lighting and music while respecting livestock and the wild animals that call the rolling hills their homes.

While you select your choice of entertainment and theme, our amenities and accessible venue spaces can be adapted to your wishes, with a key focus on exceptional menus, delicious drinks and a personal touch where no requests are too much trouble.

Your choice of cuisine can have a big impact on the ambience of your special day, and our locally sourced ingredients and fresh vegetables from our on-site kitchen garden make Southend Barns one of the best venues in West Sussex for couples who prioritise truly sustainable produce and farm to fork dining. We’d recommend checking with your guests from the very beginning if they have any allergies, dietary requirements or intolerances that should be accounted for, whether brides, grooms, civil partners or guests. Advance notice helps our accomplished chefs and planners adapt the menu or ingredients to any such requirements in good time so you can enjoy your perfect day knowing that your catering requirements have been professionally managed.

Creating Seamless Communications With Your Idyllic Sussex Rural Wedding Venue

A setting within beautiful parkland at the foot of the South Downs National Park is a special place to host your civil ceremony or wedding – but we always reiterate that communication is key to a well-organised, seamless fairy-tale wedding.

As many of the finest wedding venues will agree, prior preparation is the secret ingredient of a flawless occasion.

For any couple planning their big day, our tip would be to be open in explaining your accommodation requirements, sharing your ideas of your perfect venue, and setting priorities that our planners can use to tailor your celebrations.

We tend not to offer standardised wedding packages. Instead, here at Southend Barns, one of the handful of venues in West Sussex known for its incredible attention to detail, we pride ourselves on speaking with every couple to understand their priorities, and with many years of experience in hosting aspirational weddings, we can always share our thoughts to help with your plans.

Our valued couples enjoy exclusive use of our West Sussex wedding venue however they may wish to utilise it, from dreamy ceremonies in the walled garden to romantic photos over the stunning countryside and lavish celebrations with their nearest and dearest.

The Practical Aspects of Selecting A Premium Sussex Wedding Venue

The romance and charm of selecting West Sussex wedding venues can sometimes detract from the practicalities – but our incredible events team can assist. Location may be an easy choice, but it is also worth thinking about your guests, access to local hotels and the simplicity of transportation.

Providing handy advice for your guests within your wedding invites is a statement of thoughtfulness and can make it easier for attendees to organise their itineraries. As a few pointers:

· There are several local hotels and accommodation sites that are experienced with hosting wedding guests, and we can provide a downloadable contact list.

· Guests travelling from around the UK can make their way to Chichester – a refined cathedral city with direct train connections to London. The trip from Chichester is nine minutes by car or taxi, and we can suggest local taxi firms to pre-arrange pick-up points.

· Southampton Airport is just under 27 miles from Chichester, with Aer Lingus, British Airways, easyJet, KLM and TUI all flying to and from the airport.

Explaining the easy accessibility can be welcomed by international attendees and ensure their comfort and experience is as exceptional as your own.

Including an explainer card with your invitations makes it simple to cover as much detail as you would like, describing how to reach your wedding venue, the best options for overnight accommodation and working through the arrangements for children so everybody who you would love to attend has all the support they need to make it to your day.

What to Look for in an Exclusive Use Wedding Venue in West Sussex

Exclusivity is a common priority, where there is no likelihood of feeling like you need to end your celebrations earlier than you wish or pressure to conclude a wedding ceremony or civil ceremony any faster than necessary.

This allows brides, grooms and partners the time to work through their vows and express everything they need to say.

As a final checklist of advice before selecting your West Sussex countryside wedding venue:

· Always visit your shortlisted wedding venues in West Sussex in person; many guests contact us, having attended their southeast venue, only to find that the impression achieved through photos was not as expected in person.

· Plan your wedding photos beforehand, giving your photographer a list of pictures you’d love to have – if possible, with a list of guests, family members or relations.

· Take up the offer of a tasting menu in advance of your wedding; our culinary team takes great pride in creating inventive, sumptuous and memorable dishes and will love to receive your feedback and input into your menu.

· Never feel the need to conform; prestigious West Sussex wedding venues will listen to your thoughts and explain how to achieve the theme, style or ambience you have dreamed of – this is no blueprint for your wedding day. We go the extra mile to transform our heritage barns and grounds into the ideal background.

· Make the most of the stunning countryside and backdrops. Professional wedding photographers and videographers can create sheer magic with the right setting. Whether you imagine hosting your wedding ceremony indoors or outdoors in summer or winter, a touch of nature can breathe life into those images you will treasure forever.

We appreciate that choosing your West Sussex wedding venue can feel like a huge decision – and our team at Southend Barns will do everything possible to remove all the pressure while you make your preparations, as a wedding venue like no other, and backed by a superior team of wedding planners whose reputation speaks for itself.

Please download our wedding brochure or arrange a convenient time to tour our barn wedding venue in person for greater insight into the quality and tailored experience we offer every valued guest who chooses Southend Barns as their perfect wedding venue.

Making the Most of your Wedding Speeches

Emily & Ian wedding speeches at Southend Barns

For better or for worse, speeches are often a very memorable part of a wedding day. From the good natured jibes of the best man, to the touching trip down memory lane delivered by a family member and of course the heartfelt tributes made by the bride or groom.

Who you choose to speak on your wedding day, what they say and when they do so, is something that is entirely personal to you and your partner. However, there are some tried and tested guidelines we always share with couples to help avoid any stereotypical wedding day speech pitfalls.

From timings and length to the technical side of things, here at Southend Barns we’ve compiled our top tips for getting the most out of your wedding day speeches. Keep reading to find out more…

Timing is Everything

The key to successful wedding day speeches is timing. Wait too long and focus can get lost following the personalised cocktails or Pimp Your Prosecco cart, strike too soon and you’re competing with reuniting family and friends.

An often-overlooked section of the day that is perfect for speeches is your reception drinks. Whether the Father of the Bride is a little shy and keen to shake off the nerves, or you’re worried about the Best Man indulging a little too much before he speaks, this is a lovely way to close your reception drinks and invite guests into the Threshing Barn to enjoy your delicious wedding breakfast.

The end of the meal is another great time to carry out the speeches as everyone is relaxed, satisfied and ready to sit back and enjoy. It also gives the photographer an opportunity to capture some lovely candid shots of your guests whilst everyone is fairly still and focused on what is being said.

Breaking Tradition?

Traditionally the order of speeches tends to be; Father of the Bride, the Groom and then the Best Man, but couples are now carving their own path when it comes to who speaks on their wedding day.

Whether the bridesmaids are taking the stand, your mother would like to publicly wish you well or you’ve decided to address the room as a newly-wed couple. Whoever you choose to toast your big day, we suggest keeping your speeches to a maximum of four and limiting each to around five minutes.

Why you might ask? Well, as a rule guests have an attention span of around 20 mins. This means if you have four people, speaking for five minutes at a time, each of your loved ones should get the focus and attention they deserve. Of course there are no rules, and you and your wedding party should do what feels right for you, however it is worth noting attention may start wavering if speeches go on for too long.

If you are keen to keep speeches short but a loved one is adamant that they have too much to say for your proposed time limit, why not ask them to write a letter filled with anything that can’t be said within the time you’ve given? They could even present the letter to you and your partner on the day so you can treasure this sweet and heartfelt wedding day moment forever.

Testing, Testing, 1,2,3

Both our Threshing Barn and our Collecting Yard are quite substantial spaces to fill, add to that a sea of guests dampening the sound and even the best public speaker would struggle to be heard by all. Therefore, it is a really good idea for your speakers to make use of our in-house microphones which are available to use both inside and outside. Using them ensures everyone can hear without anyone having to resort to raising their voice.

Don’t worry if you are a complete technophobe, our Southend Barns team will be responsible for the set-up and testing of any microphones being used, so all you and your loved ones need do is steady those nerves and speak.

Taking Notes

Although wedding day speeches are absolutely personal to you and your loved one, over the years we have noted a few tips which have made for some truly beautiful moments.

Although it may be tempting to write out a wedding speech verbatim, some of the most heartfelt tributes we have witnessed have been read from notes. Perhaps easier said than done, a well-rehearsed speech prompted by notes allows the speaker to be flexible and really engage with the audience, instead of focussing on keeping their place on the page.

That takes us to our next tip – practice! Although a few blessed thespians might be able to wing it on the day, for most of us, a lack of preparation will be rather apparent. Practice won’t just help you iron out any kinks, it will also significantly help ease any potential stage fright.

Finally, if you just don’t know where to begin when writing your wedding speech, it can be helpful to identify one particular theme or story to base your speech around. This is a great way to keep your address focused and to the point and can also help provide a bit of structure.

Raising a Glass

Whatever part of your day you decide to have speeches, our wedding day team will ensure glasses are full before the first toast begins.

Our tipple of choice is sparkling wine from local vineyard Tinwood which we feel fits the occasion very nicely, however we have a range of sparkling wines and champagnes to choose from which can be ordered through Roots prior to your wedding day.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask our Southend Barns team for advice or guidance.

Our Southend Barns Date Nights

Wedding venue bar

We recently held the very first of our Southend Barns Date Nights. Exclusively for the lovely couples due to tie the knot at our wedding venue, Date Night provides couples and their families with a wonderful opportunity to meet some cherry-picked suppliers and discover all the exciting styling and culinary options we have for adding that extra touch of magic and personality to a wedding.

The evening took place throughout our venue with everything from our bridal suite to our indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces, reception barn, Shepherd’s Hut and landscaped gardens open for guests to enjoy. Each space was also adorned with beautiful wedding day inspiration and possibilities for each couple to consider for their big day.

“We loved being part of both Date Nights. They were glorious evenings full of delicious food, mouth-watering cocktails, sunshine, music, inspiration and had a great atmosphere.

It was a joy to see and meet all of the excited couples looking around the venue with all that it has to offer and to work alongside some other really creative suppliers.  The whole event was relaxed allowing people to soak up the sun whilst enjoying the atmosphere, asking questions and experiencing all of the ideas and tasters on show giving them inspiration for what they could incorporate in to their special days.” Kelly, Kelly Hearn Photography

As guests arrived they were greeted by our friendly team who outlined the premise of the evening and served a delicious glass of either local Tinwood sparkling wine or our homemade Elderflower Spritz or Coastal Spritz. Visitors then made their way round our beautiful wedding venue, soaking in the styling ideas on display and sampling delectable treats created by our Roots catering team. All to the soothing sounds of Toast Functions acts, singer and guitarist Luke and steel pan player Mica.

Outside in the Collecting Yard stood our new Hydration Station, which was filled with delicious water infusions perfect for keeping guests cool and refreshed during your wedding day. Our S’mores Cart and Pimp Your Prosecco stand was also on display in this area ready to be sampled by our Date Night guests. Our team chatted to couples about the various options available and provided shot-glass tasters of our popular cocktail menu.

As well as culinary delights, The Collecting Yard’s central lawn was set up with outdoor games and our children’s Teepee offering – the perfect little hideaways to keep young ones occupied during reception drinks.

The Threshing Barn – our large and beautiful reception space – displayed five of our popular Styling Selections and also our props station which showcased the many decorative additions we have available to couples. Created exclusively for Southend Barns, exquisite tablescapes gave a sample of the Styling Selection designs available, including the newest Magical Monochrome package and our Romantic Drapes option. With no space neglected, our entrance hall also featured a new styling selection designed to make best use of this space and create a striking first impression for guests visiting our barns.

As well as wedding day styling, The Threshing Barn also played host to our new Dessert Bar featuring a collection of sweet treats created by our Roots chefs. These included: Strawberry & Elderflower Cheesecake with White Chocolate and Honeycomb; Chocolate & Salted Caramel Croquant with Chocolate Goo and Chocolate Crisp; Tonka Bean Creme Brulee; and Passionfruit Posset with Mango & Pineapple salsa and Pink Pepper Meringue.

Through the patio doors of the Threshing Barn the Roots team were also serving pizzas straight from their outside kitchen with options including: Pesto Chicken & Red Pepper Pizza (torn roasted pesto chicken, balsamic red peppers, parmesan, pesto, and pine nut dressing);

Chinese Style Duck Pizza (slow cooked duck, spring onion, cucumber, hoi sin sauce, sesame seeds and wild coriander) and the plant-based Kitchen Garden Pizza (baby beetroots, Nutbourne cherry tomatoes, spring onion, basil cream cheese, toasted seeds and garden herb pesto).

Moving into The Dairy Barn, we showcased the work of some of our highly recommended wedding suppliers. Lucy from The Floral Artisan demonstrated her skill with an exquisite moongate floral display adding a striking focus to our tranquil, beamed indoor ceremony space. We also had photographer Kelly Hearn, videographer WEDDINGS by liav, and cake maker Carole from Country Kitchen and Exclusive Cakes chatting to guests and sharing their expertise. Carole provided a collection of delicious cake samples including vanilla, strawberry and champagne, lemon and raspberry and a new flavour of pistachio, white chocolate and raspberry.

“As always Southend Barns organised another successful event. Two date night evenings for future brides, grooms and their families to visit their booked wedding venue. I was grateful to be invited to display a number of wedding cake designs and offer tastings of cake to Southend Barns future brides and grooms. The barns and grounds looked amazing, immaculately and thoughtfully set up to showcase the venue and the serving of drinks, s’mores and more! The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with the Southend Barns events team on hand to meet, greet and answer any queries.” Carole, Country Kitchen and Exclusive Cakes

Finally, our Bridal Suite, outdoor ceremony space – The Secret Garden – and our Mama Lou Shepherd’s Hut were open for couples and their families to explore and enjoy.

We live and breathe weddings here at Southend Barns and providing each and every couple who chooses us with the very best experience is our number one priority. We are delighted with the success of our first two Date Nights and the opportunity they gave our couples to think outside of the box with their wedding planning. The feedback from those who attended has been simply wonderful.

If you are interested in finding out more about any of the elements on display during Date Night our office team will be more than happy to help on 01243 641247.

Why Wedding Day Desserts Will Never Go Out of Style

Roots Catering wedding food

From Bakewells to brûlées, nothing can evoke culinary happiness, and even a touch of nostalgia, like the sweet taste of a favourite dessert. Often the pièce de résistance to any menu, wedding day desserts are also a wonderful pick-me up for guests planning to dance the night away.

With endless possibilities available, our Executive Chef (and pudding connoisseur), Dan, gives his advice on what to consider when choosing your dessert options.

With a 30 year career in the industry, starting out in restaurants and country houses all across Europe, Dan is an expert in all things sweet!

Have you seen much of a change in the approach to wedding day desserts?

Absolutely! Couples have so much more choice now than they used to. Classic sit down desserts will always have an important place in a wedding breakfast menu, but now couples are bringing sweet treats into other areas of their wedding day. From macaroon towers, to ice cream trucks, donut walls, s’mores and more. The possibilities are endless for creating a wedding day full to the brim of much loved treats.

Do you think it is important to tailor your wedding day dessert to your style of wedding?

Whilst – in my opinion – the most important thing when it comes to your wedding breakfast is choosing food that you LOVE. Our Roots team can help you fit your choice of wedding day food to the style of your big day.

When it comes to desserts we have some beautiful options for all levels of formality. If high dining is the style of your dream wedding day menu then our luxury profiterole is pure indulgence. This large light and crispy choux bun topped with croquant crumble is available in a range of different flavours. My personal favourite is our chocolate and Amarena cherry. Filled with a fragrant cherry and vanilla cream with a chocolate crémeux on top, scattered with Amarena cherries, homemade honeycomb and a chocolate crisp. This decadent treat is then served with a locally made cherry and chocolate ice cream.

If you are planning a more laid back kind of vibe for your wedding then our new dessert bar is perfect! Serving a collection of mini desserts including passionfruit posset with mango, pineapple & coconut; Tonka bean crème brûlée with rhubarb; raspberry & white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry jelly & white chocolate honeycomb and chocolate & salted caramel crémeux with toffee popcorn!

The dessert bar is part of our new outside kitchen and is a more interactive style of dining where you and your guests can come up, graze and chat with our Roots chefs.

For those looking, is there an alternative to the classic wedding cake which is just as show-stopping?

Indeed there is – a croque-en-bouche! A French take on a wedding cake, this impressive tower consists of Choux buns filled with vanilla cream, then dipped in hot caramel. The tower is finished with spun sugar and decorated. Traditionally in France, it is customary for the cake to be smashed with a sword by the married couple, before being served to guests…

What are your favourite wedding day desserts?

Our Roots menu features a couple of real classics that have really stood the test of time and also demonstrate the incredible skill of our pastry chefs.

One of my favourites is our Sticky Toffee Pudding, served with salted toffee sauce, marmalade and honeycomb ice cream and an unexpected hint of passionfruit sauce – trust me, it is incredible.

Another firm favourite of mine – and many of our guests – is our classic Bakewell Tart. This carefully honed dish oozes skill and perfection in terms of the finest of pastry, lots of delicious raspberry homemade jam and a filling of light frangipane that is laced with amaretto. This is all topped with flaked almonds and brushed with an apricot and amaretto glaze. Served warm with classic vanilla custard and cherry ice cream, this stand out dish is pure indulgence.

Have you got anything new on the menu?

Our team at Roots live and breathe exquisite flavours so we’re always creating new seasonal menu options for our couples to choose from. New to the kitchen this summer is our tonka bean crème brûlée. This wonderful new flavour puts a fresh spin on a classic and much loved dessert. The dish is served with poached strawberries and strawberry ice cream – truly a match made in heaven!

We also recently introduced a new dessert. Channelling childhood memories, this nostalgic favourite has been given a luxe, fine dining update. Our very own vanilla and cherry “Viennetta”! Served with the divine combination of chocolate goo and cherry gel, this new in dessert is already proving popular with our couples.

What is your advice on where to start when choosing your wedding day breakfast?

Relax, our Roots team are here to guide you through the whole process and ensure that you and your partner get the wedding day menu of your dreams.

Don’t fret about the time of year your wedding is taking place – unless you are wanting berries as these are prime between May to September. But if you both live for sticky toffee pudding or want a Bakewell tart on a hot day in July then why not! It is your wedding!

My top tip is to just choose what you like and if you really can’t decide then our dessert bar is a great option, or why not try a couples’ dessert – the perfect way to both enjoy your favourite pud on your big day!

Guest Blog: The Floral Artisan

Wedding florists

My name is Lucy, I am Creative Director at The Floral Artisan, a bespoke floral design business in Chichester, West Sussex. My team and I create romantic and whimsical custom floral displays, that channel the beauty of nature and really celebrate the love of the couples we work with.

June and July are popular months for weddings in the UK and a stunning time of year to get married at Southend Barns Wedding Venue in West Sussex. As the weather warms and the days get longer, there are an abundance of beautiful flowers in bloom – the perfect opportunity to incorporate seasonal florals into your wedding décor.

I have worked with Southend Barns for years creating unique floral displays for weddings, photoshoots, parties and more. As the wedding season takes off, the team have asked me to share my thoughts on the wedding day floral trend that currently has me swooning…

White and Black with a Dash of Mother Nature

If you’re looking for a classic and timeless colour palette with a modern twist, then a white and black monochrome theme, softened with dark greenery is an exciting but sophisticated way to go, and a fresh, new wedding trend that I’m loving!

A symbol of new beginnings, white flowers are a popular choice for weddings, but just because they are a classic choice, doesn’t mean they can’t be styled in a beautiful, new way. Some gorgeous white flowers that are in season at the moment include peonies, roses, delphinium, sweet peas, stocks, and hydrangeas. All of these flowers can be used in bouquets, centrepieces, and even as part of your ceremony décor such as wedding arches and large pedestal arrangements.

A good tip to add depth and contrast to your white floral arrangements, is to consider incorporating black or dark accents. These unexpected touches can be in the form of black vases, black candles and candle holders or even monochrome stationary and signage. The striking contrast in colour works to complement the angelic floral arrangements beautifully for a truly striking look.

The natural world is a huge inspiration to us at The Floral Artisan and our wedding arrangements often embody the deconstructed, romantic aesthetic that nature does so well.

Foliage is an incredibly hard working element of your wedding day décor, tying together and creating unison between different design elements. In this instance, dark greenery looks particularly striking as a backdrop for your white and black arrangement. The natural texture and tone of the foliage works to link together the stark contrast between white and black, adding a romantic twist whilst retaining the impact.

Foliage can also be freshened up with the inclusion of some unexpected additions. Large dark tropical leaves, Soft Ruscus and trailing ferns are all great options that can add both texture and depth to your arrangements and can be used in bouquets, centrepieces, and even as part of your ceremony arch.

Lucy’s Top Wedding Flower Tip

When it comes to choosing your wedding flowers, it’s important to consider what’s in season. Not only will this ensure that your flowers are fresh, vibrant and looking their absolute best, but it can also help you save money on your floral budget.

By choosing seasonal blooms and incorporating a classic colour palette, you can create a timeless and elegant wedding that will be remembered for years to come.

Styled Shoot: Black & White Wedding Inspiration

Black and white wedding dress inspiration

Highlighting the beauty and versatility of our West Sussex wedding venue, we recently held a chic styled shoot proving that barn wedding day styling doesn’t always have to be rustic!

The shoot brought together a selection of the very best, handpicked wedding suppliers from the West Sussex area including a florist, cake maker, stylist and photographer. Together we curated a cool but romantic look with a contemporary black and white colour theme, enhanced by touches of gold and striking displays of greenery.

The look was inspired by the newest addition to our popular Styling Selections, Magical Monochrome. Working with The Floral Artisan, our new styling option is a sleek but romantic pairing of chic black with crisp, beautiful white. The stylish package includes everything you need for your wedding day décor including matt black candlesticks and holders, black and glass table numbers with tables adorned with beautiful foliage and vases filled with gorgeous seasonal white flowers.

We combined this look with our new Entrance Display Styling Selection, designed to enhance the entrance space of the Threshing Barn with a modern medley of monochrome touches. The look features a large black arched mirror, black and glass cards box and black lanterns and candles all set to the backdrop of beautiful foliage. These new styling options provided the inspiration for our recent shoot and the end result was magical.

The theme was used across the venue to ensure the shoot gave couples plenty of inspiration for their whole wedding day, from the ceremony right through to reception. Shot by the talented Ruby Roux Photography, the photoshoot took place in our impressive Threshing Barn and tranquil Dairy Barn.

The expansive reception space of the Threshing Barn featured beautifully dressed round tables with our twinkling chandeliers drawing the eye up to a stunning hoop of foliage suspended from the rafters. This was enhanced by simple but romantic white drapery. Romantic Drapes is a new element of our Southend Barns Styling Selections and one we know will be popular!

Lucy from coveted bespoke floral design business, The Floral Artisan, provided breath-taking arrangements which complemented the romantic feel of the shoot beautifully. Known for her structural yet whimsical take on wedding flowers, Lucy created a modern twist on a classic botanical style, carefully crafting fabulous focal displays using foliage and houseplants as well as minimalistic white centrepieces featuring seasonal spring flowers which worked with the monochrome theme perfectly.

The overall colour palette being monochrome with green and warm gold tones, Lucy opted for white flowers in different shapes and textures including anemones, freesias, spirea, ranunculus, tulips and large blousy roses and orchids. These all contrasted beautifully against a backdrop of dark, delicious greenery, peppered with the unexpected addition of houseplants!

Wedding day houseplants featured heavily in the styling, taking the look to new heights and helping to create a fresh and modern vibe for the shoot. The trend for living plants as a décor option on your wedding day is one we love as it aligns with our passion for sustainability. For this shoot we used beautiful houseplants from local grower The Little Botanical, who are based just up the road in Chichester. Plants including Strelitzia bird of paradise, areca palm and leafy monstera in the brand’s concrete pots added a striking twist to displays. The sweetest succulents in harmonising black and gold pots were also dotted across tables as wedding favours.

Tables were dressed with black tapered candlesticks in elegant black holders and assorted black and glass vases, courtesy of our Magical Monochrome Styling Selection. These were complemented by delicate scalloped glass charger plates with gold edging, matt black crockery, brushed gold cutlery and glassware delicately edged in gold, all by Crystal Hire.

Picture perfect against a wall draped in white, stood a beautiful three-tiered wedding cake by Cakes in Bloom. The cake was decorated with a gorgeous oversized black ribbon and was framed inside a beautiful floral half-moon display with black hurricane lanterns, candles and signage. Twinkling fairy lights glowed from beyond the white drapes which drew the eye to the picturesque set up. The floral moon was also used in the Dairy Barn for the ceremony, showing just how versatile some displays can be.

Curved signage by My Event Lab finished the look adding texture with a range of plaques in varying colours including matt black, stone and semi-opaque clear with gold lettering.

Over in the Dairy Barn, the theme continued with the incredible half-moon display by The Floral Artisan forming the focus. Overhead were swathes of white drapes and twinkling fairy lights, highlighting the barn’s beautiful beams. A mass of candles adorned the floor at the end of the aisle casting a romantic light across the room, which translated perfectly on camera.

Both spaces were styled to showcase the incredible versatility of our 220-year-old farm buildings and the end result is a great example of how our wedding venue’s traditional charm can be beautifully combined with a sophisticated and contemporary aesthetic.

The perfect finishing touch, models (and real life couple) Marysia and Ryan looked resplendent in chic wedding day looks from Whyte Weddings and Astares. Marysia was beautifully styled by Lauren from ID Hair & Make Up, who went for a soft but striking look which highlighted Marysia’s natural beauty and intricate lace gown perfectly.

Timeless and sophisticated, capturing the essence of spring in a modern and visually stunning way, we are beyond delighted with the results of our styled shoot and hope that it provides some exciting wedding day inspiration for our couples.

Huge thanks go to all the amazing suppliers who worked so hard to bring this incredible look together. You can find a full list of the talented people involved below.

Love is in the Air – The Joy of a Spring Wedding

The start of spring has an energy all of its own, a joyful optimism as the world bursts back to life and in our countryside setting we are lucky to witness this glorious reawakening first hand. From the incredible displays of tulips in our landscaped gardens to the beautiful blossom adorning trees and the glorious sound of birds filling the air – we have to admit, our West Sussex wedding venue looks pretty spectacular during spring.

Although even with minimal additions a spring wedding at Southend Barns is breath-taking, this time of year offers incredible scope for the imagination when it comes to seasonal wedding décor. To help give your wedding planning a kick start, our team has come up with some of our favourite wedding trends for spring. Keep reading to find out more…

What a Wonderful World

Spring really is an enchanting time of year at Southend Barns. Our gardeners work tirelessly to ensure every inch of our wedding venue is absolutely beautiful all year round, but there is just something about the gardens springing to life once more which fills us with delight.

If you want to make the most of our stunning surroundings then why not consider our Secret Garden for your wedding ceremony? Positioned between our alpaca’s field and the pretty flint wall of our Dairy Barn, The Secret Garden features an elegant pergola at the end of a sweeping aisle. Lined with chic stone benches and edged with beds bursting with seasonal flowers, The Secret Garden makes an enchanting setting for your outdoor wedding ceremony.

To add a personal touch, many couples like to decorate the pergola with floral displays. From circular structures clad with flowers to cascades of greenery entwined round the wooden beams, whether your aesthetic is maximalist or more refined, The Secret Garden offers a beautiful backdrop to your spring wedding day.

She Comes in Colours

Bursting with optimism, spring is a gorgeous time to use beautiful colour in your wedding day styling. Classic options include pretty pastels in pinks and yellows, but why not embrace the unexpected with a day dedicated to beautiful blues or be inspired by the blossoming spring gardens and add a splash of colour with vibrant corals, pretty lilac and bright, sunny yellow.

Both wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses can also take gorgeous inspiration from this time of year. From embroidered wedding dresses featuring cascades of appliqué flowers to the subtle hint of a floral design in a lace overlay, this fresh trend allows you to go as big – or small – as you want.

If your dream wedding gown is sleek and minimal but you’d still like to include spring florals, then bridesmaid dresses are a great way to inject the trend into your wedding styling. From tonally printed silk gowns to mismatched floral dresses, there is something to suit every taste and level of formality.

Drip, Drip, Drop Little April Showers

Our spring weather is known to be a little unpredictable – it’s part of what gives us such glorious lush countryside. As a wedding venue in the South of England we are prepared for any eventuality and have ensured that, inside or out, our venue can be enjoyed to the full no matter the weather!

Our Collecting Yard enjoys views across our central landscaped garden and is completely sheltered from the elements with glass screens, heaters and a central fire pit. From the frostiest of winter’s night to the height of summer, our Collecting Yard provides an ideal space to enjoy the outdoors in the most comfortable way possible.

An unexpected benefit of a rain shower on your wedding day is some absolutely glorious photo opportunities! If the heavens open, it is all hands on deck to provide our brides and grooms shelter from the elements. In fact, some of the most romantic wedding pictures we have seen have stemmed from a rainy walk under our umbrella tunnel to the Dairy Barn.

Spring Wedding Styling

A wedding trend we are currently in love with is the use of blossom filled branches to form incredible sculptural centrepieces. Whether used alone for minimalist cool, or in collaboration with decadent floral arrangements, this great wedding styling option adds height and interest to any centrepiece.

If you are at a loss with where to start with your wedding day styling, then did you know that we offer a range of styling selections? Each of our five styling options – including our new fairy light ceiling installations – has been carefully tailored to complement the beauty of our barns in the best possible way.

Perfect for a spring wedding, Champagne Rose combines the sweetest pink and white silk flowers with chic copper touches and sleek tapered candles. Wild & Green is also a stunning option for spring wedding styling featuring swathes of luscious greenery offset by rustic twine, glass and fragrant herbs. Each of our styling selections can be used alone or adapted to incorporate additional wedding décor elements.

Find out about all our Styling Selections here.

Food Glorious Food

From spring greens to classic roast lamb, spring food offers a mouth-watering selection of flavours, perfect for a dreamy wedding breakfast.

Our Roots Kitchen Garden is the source of many of our seasonal ingredients including our herbs and lots of our vegetables.  Our focus at Roots has always been about using incredible quality ingredients to create delectable dishes. By growing as much as we can onsite we are able to offer the delicious, authentic flavours that only garden to table can provide.

From our Roots Allotment Vegetable Salad to our Sussex Wild Mushroom, Leek and Toasted Pumpkin Seed Tortellini and of course the spring classic Overnight Shoulder of Lamb, served with a rosemary and cranberry glaze, roasted new potatoes, crushed pea and mint salad and delicious allotment vegetables. Our Southend Barns wedding day menu packs a punch in innovative seasonal dishes with something for every couple and their guests to enjoy.
